Meet the President and Founder, Joe Van Deusen.

It is my life’s purpose to make the world a better place for future generations. You’ll often hear me say that no one starts a charity nonprofit that isn’t at least a little bit of an idealist. What sets me apart from most is a grounded realism of the time, money, and effort required to achieve big dreams one deliberate step at a time as a community.

As a licensed engineer and lifelong learner with a public works construction background, I appreciate the interrelated nature of complex systems and how they can be built to either serve or harm people.

Clarksville is a special place. (After all, I met my wife at the Greenway and got married here.) However, we have found our community in a vicious cycle of sprawling (dumb) growth that harms people and ultimately steals prosperity from our children and grandchildren, all the while silently draining our time and money every day.

This is a wide-reaching problem that I could not let stand, so I decided to channel every ounce of my knowledge, experience, and passionate care for others into taking action and organizing others to challenge the intertia of sprawl and challenge long-held assumptions about our place.

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

As you will notice, I am not yet an old man, but in 20 years I will be.

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

As a person who has always had an eye toward the future and an understanding of the past, I know we can make Clarksville into a Strong Town that is the best we can deliver for our children and grandchildren.
