When roads are expanded, development occurs farther out, taking farms, forests, and meadows. The easier it is to get to jobs from your house, the easier it is for a developer to build a subdivision next door. This brings noise, visual clutter, and disruption in the serenity of wide-open places.
Also, that land for new or widened roads to support sprawl has to come from somewhere, right? Somewhere like…private property.
